Life as a Gen-X 50 something, who just retired.

My Story, as it unfolds in this new life

It is going to happen…

After working at the same place, having various roles, for the last 22 plus years, and having 4 years of military service in the 90’s, I put in my packet to Fort Riley Kansas and awaited confirmation.

That sounds simple, but if you have paid taxes, tried to apply for a loan or even tried to register your vehicle at the Motor Vehicle Administration, simple is never simple. What I have learned over my years, is that sometimes, if you screw up the paperwork, you will get a faster form of assistance than if you ask at the outset. I had done that so many times at work, claiming ignorance or stupidity. Both of which can be easily believed.

After my obligatory email reply, I corrected my mistakes, filled out the other forms that I was missing and ordered a formal copy of my DD-214 (The one I was given and told to make a million copies of, since that was the only copy I would ever have – was available in official form, from the govt, for a fee. Go figure)

Then the last email came. “Congratulations, your packet is complete, someone will contact you 2 weeks prior to your retirement date”. I had done it. I had made it, mostly. But now what? Covid, Inflation, taxes. I wondered, not what the hell am I doing. What the Hell am I going to do? And So my journey begins.
